We’ve all misplaced our keys or forgotten someone’s name. We often blame these moments on busy schedules or the fact that we’re getting older, which could be true. Fleeting memory loss is a normal and natural part of aging. In fact, 1 in 9 adults aged 45 or older report experiencing confusion or memory loss. But, this forgetfulness can increase with age. Here, we share some simple ways that you can keep your mind sharp.

Keep your brain in shape

The more your brain is stimulated, the younger it may stay. Using your brain more can even help to create new brain cells. Ways you can do this include crossword puzzles, painting, reading or online brain games.

Get enough sleep

Your brain is constantly working while you’re awake. But while you sleep, it has a chance to relax. This is important to maintaining a healthy brain and sharp memory. Try getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

Maintain a healthy diet

A healthy diet is good for your overall health. This includes your brain health. Try brain-boosting foods like salmon, nuts and avocados.

Get moving

Even a little exercise can go a long way to fueling your brain. But make sure you set realistic goals. Try walking or maybe join a gym. Please talk to your doctor before changing your exercise routine.

Keep learning

Staying socially active can help ward off depression and stress. Both can contribute to memory loss. A great way to do this is by taking a class. Many colleges offer free or discounted tuition to older adults. There are also many online options. You can even have a family member or friend to take a class with you and connect once a week to talk about it.

Please talk to your doctor about any health concerns you may have.
