What is an Annual Wellness Visit? 

Your Annual Wellness Visit is a yearly visit different from an annual physical exam. You’ll get extra time with your provider to focus on your health. During the visit, you and your provider will create or update your personalized care plan focused on your unique needs.

During this Medicare Annual Wellness Visit, your provider will:

  • Ask you about your medical history
  • Review your medications
  • Do a blood screening
  • Talk with you about annual screenings you may need

We’ll remind you each year to schedule your Annual Wellness Visit. Together, you and your provider will create a plan to keep you healthy.

Common questions about Annual Wellness Visits

  • You qualify for an Annual Wellness Visit if:

    • You’ve had Medicare Part B for more than 12 months
    • You haven’t had a “Welcome to Medicare” visit in the last 12 months
    OR
  • Your Annual Wellness Visit is a once-a-year exam to look for signs of medical problems. Medicare Part B covers the cost of this exam. If you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan, ask the plan if it covers an Annual Wellness Visit.

  • The Annual Wellness Visit focuses on preventive care or care that helps stop illness and injury. You may need to schedule a separate visit with your provider if you have other long-term problems you wish to talk about, such as:

    • Asthma
    • Diabetes
    • High blood pressure 

    You’ll want your doctor to have enough time to give any long-term problems you may have the attention they may need.

    • Your medical records
    • Your family health history 
    • Immunization records (shots you’ve had)
    • Any prescription or over-the-counter medications you may take

    Please note: If you can’t bring your medications with you, bring a list of what you take, why you take it and how often.
